- W2 Contract-to-Hire, 12 Months
- This position is remote.
- Candidates would ideally reside in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, or West Virginia. While not preferred, candidates based in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Florida, or Texas are eligible to apply.
- Shift: Overnight (5 days per week, 8-hour shifts)
- Shift Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday
- Shift Hours: 6:00 PM–2:00 AM or 10:00 PM–6:00 AM (availability for all shifts required)
Overview & Responsibilities
We are working with a leading enterprise-level health insurance provider to identify a Senior Systems Engineer with deep expertise in mainframe technologies. This is a critical overnight role, requiring someone who thrives in an independent work environment and has strong problem-solving skills to ensure seamless operations during off-hours. The Senior Systems Engineer will oversee system stability and performance for the client’s mainframe and distributed systems. This includes monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving complex technical issues using a variety of tools and processes. With limited support available during overnight shifts, the Senior Systems Engineer will rely on their technical expertise and adherence to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain operational excellence. Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring mainframe and distributed systems to ensure uninterrupted functionality.
- Resolving system alerts, diagnosing issues, and implementing effective solutions.
- Applying knowledge of DB2, zOS, CICS, JCL, and COBOL for system optimization and troubleshooting.
- Using SQL and JavaScript to address development and troubleshooting needs.
- Managing and maintaining DB2 subsystems, control tables, stored procedures, and data-sharing configurations.
- Executing UNIX and Windows commands for system management and maintenance.
- Supporting batch processing and job scheduling tasks.
- Documenting system incidents, resolutions, and proposed improvements.
- Conducting root cause analyses and recommending process enhancements.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams as needed to address escalated issues.
Required Skills & Experience
- At least 5 years of experience as a Systems Engineer or in a similar technical role with a focus on mainframe systems.
- Proficiency in mainframe technologies including DB2, zOS, CICS, JCL, and COBOL.
- Familiarity with UNIX and Windows systems, including commands and structures.
- Strong knowledge of DB2, including commands, stored procedures, control tables, and subsystems.
- Strong CA7 skills to create and alter new and existing jobs and job schedules.
- Proven troubleshooting abilities and the capability to work independently in an overnight setting.
- Ability to follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with SQL and JavaScript for system troubleshooting and development.
- Experience in the health insurance or a similarly regulated industry.
- Familiarity with distributed systems alongside mainframe expertise.
- Knowledge of data sharing and DB2 performance optimization in multi-user environments.
- Experience with batch processing workflows and job scheduling tools.
- Previous experience in a 24/7 operational support role.
- Understanding of system integration and automation.
